The City Tax is an accommodation tax, due for payment for bookings made from the 1st of January 2014.

The City Tax amounts to five percent of the room net price, excluding VAT as well as fees for other services such as mini-bar, sauna or spa area. The tax applies only to private overnight stays and the collection of it is limited to 21 consecutive days.

The City Tax is calculated and added to the bill by the hostel. It is an indirect tax: The accommodation providers have to transfer the tax and are authorized to claim the same amount of money from their guests in turn. They are not obliged to pass the fee on to their guests, though. Accommodation providers are defined as businesses that provide short-term overnight accommodation, such as hotels, guest houses, private landlords, independent hostels, youth hostels and campsites.

Since 1st of April 2024 the City Tax now also applies to business travelers. For business overnight stays that have been legally agreed by 31st of March 2024, but are actually carried out after this date, a transitional regulation applies. In this case, the City Tax Act in the version valid until 31st of March 2024 continues to apply. Business trips that fall under the transitional regulation are therefore not subject to the City Tax if the business purpose of the trip is proven.

How can I prove the business purpose of my trip?

The business purpose of a trip can be verified, for example, by a bill that is paid by or issued to the employer, or a letter from the company.

We guarantee you freshly made beds starting from 3 PM (in some cases, even faster – just ask our 24/7 reception). You can always use our free of charge luggage room. On your check out day we ask you to leave the room till 11 AM. If you like to stay a bit longer, ask for a free late check-out in advance. Of course, subject to availability.
